About

Unmanageable is a research blog that tracks the political content of struggles in and around various institutions, from twentieth-century discussions of bureaucracy and administration to the present-day national security state. The title suggests that the urgent crises of our time cannot be managed away, contrary to the hopes of many elites. Rather, these crises are themselves the result of past efforts to resolve crises while maintaining the power and privileges of particular elites, especially in multi-national corporations and the US state. Here I explore the question of how to build a world that is more democratic and less beholden to the madness of bureaucracies.

I share this project in blog form because I’m not a professional academic, so I’ve long needed a place to work through ideas, post progress, and get feedback. Comments are welcome through the contact form below. With your permission, I’ll share some comments publicly.
